What is UL Certification? Does it Matter?
Underwriters Laboratory (UL) is a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) — and more importantly, the oldest and most trusted NRTL in the world. UL's commitment to establishing and maintaining safety standards is unmatched. So yes, UL Certification matters — enormously.
What Is UL Certification?
UL Certification means that a given device or procedure has been evaluated and found to meet or exceed the established safety standards for its intended application. In Podtronix's case, this is UL/ULc 1389 — covering both U.S. and Canadian markets. UL has evaluated our materials, components, manufacturing methods, and installation standards, and the enclosure itself has met or exceeded UL's rigorous safety requirements.
UL Certification Classes for Extraction
C1D1 — Class I, Division I
A location where volatile flammable liquids or gasses are handled, processed, or used. Modern plant oil extraction uses various volatile chemicals to interact with source plant material under pressure to produce the final product yield. This is the highest hazard classification.
C1D2 — Class I, Division II
A location where volatile flammable liquids or gasses are present only under abnormal conditions — such as accidental rupture or system failure. Post-processing areas and storage rooms frequently fall under this classification.
Don't Be Fooled
Many manufacturers advertise that their products are 'Built to UL Standards' or have 'UL Listed' components. This is NOT the same as the entire enclosure being UL Listed. Their labs may actually be unsafe. Podtronix ONLY builds UL-listed C1D1 and C1D2 Extraction labs. Be aware. Be safe.
What Does 'Explosion Proof' Actually Mean?
The term 'Explosion Proof' is widely misused throughout the extraction industry. It does NOT mean that something will survive an explosion intact. When used in our industry, the intention is to indicate something designed to minimize or eliminate the potential of spark or heat that could lead to a fire or explosion. You will not find the actual term 'Explosion Proof' on any certified product in our industry — because it is not a defined or certified classification.

UL Certification is not only very expensive but a significant effort. Most companies in our industry are unwilling, or unable, to commit to this rigorous and expensive certification process.
