The term does not imply the enclosure will survive an explosion without damage; it means the sensory and safety systems, airflow, and internal environment have been designed to minimize potential fire or explosion during normal operations.
C1D1 Defined
C1D1 stands for Class I, Division I — a classification of specially constructed, enclosed hazardous environments in which volatile flammable liquids or gases can be handled, processed, or used safely. The Planning Checklist: What to Tackle Before You Spend a Dollar

You should have full knowledge of, and a commitment to strict compliance with, mandated worker safety protocols and the organizations and agencies that have jurisdiction and enforcement authority over your facility's location.

Your estimated facility, build-out, startup, training, inventory, and operational costs — combined with realistic estimations of employee costs, ancillary business expenses, and sales projections — form the foundation of your funding pitch.
Choose a Suitable Location
Regulatory authorities may determine the viability or even the legality of your extraction operation at a given location. Make absolutely sure that you can operate from both a legal and regulatory standpoint before committing to a site.
Obtain Necessary Permits and Licenses
Your research should include ALL necessary AHJs and their licensing and permitting requirements before you spend a cent. Not knowing this information can prevent you from operating when you are ready to launch.
Design and Set Up the Lab
Plan your C1D1 lab layout to include workstations for extraction, processing, and analysis. Ensure the lab is equipped with required safety equipment — fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, first aid kits. Install fume hoods for proper ventilation during solvent-based extraction.
Purchase Equipment and Supplies
Factor in not just the extraction equipment but the materials needed to maintain operational standards (filters, chemistry, etc.) and all required personal protective equipment. Worker safety is the most important aspect of any extraction operation.
Develop and Maintain SOPs
Create and maintain detailed Standard Operating Procedures for all lab processes — testing results, extraction details, safety protocols, maintenance schedules, and waste disposal. Record keeping of safety inspections, equipment maintenance, and SOP training is critical to any AHJ audit.
